BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A SPECIAL meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening last. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Tnckrt*, Brown, Somervell, Whinray, Clayton, Lewie, Townley, Tutchen, and Berry. Extension of Grey and Lowe-stbeets. Cr. Tm-’ker reported having made arrangements With Natives for purchase of required land at £3O per acre. It was well worth £lOO per acre. Agreed that the terms of £3O per acre be ‘acceded to, with thanks to Councillor Tucker for his services in connection with the matter. The consideration of tire Lowe-street business was postponed. Alteration of Bye-Laws.—Driving Sheep and Cattle. Resolved that a special meeting be held this day four weeks to confirm resolution re alterations, public ’notice being given in or during tvery week of the four. Steam Fire Engine. Cr. Tutclieu’s motion on this head fell through. This finished the special business. ORDINARY MEETING. The mfnutes of last meeting were read and 'confirmed. Several letters sent by the Council were then read. Letters were read from T. W. Carr and Sons, re boarding round building destroyed by fire. Resolved that Messrs. Carr and Sons be answered to the effect that the walls must be removed or shored up within seven days, and a light placed by night at each «nd of the boarding.—From Mr W. Adair re subscription to purchase Fire Engine. Acknowledged with thanks.—From Messrs Fenwick and Kennedy offering steamer for sale. Acknowledged.—From Messis. Oppenheimer and Co., stating that they have sent to England for Lamps.—From T. McDougall, solicitor, re poisoning of Mr. Bennett’s dog, asking for investigation, when, if proved, Mr haram be discharged from the Council’s employ. Resolved that Mr McDougall’s letter be Bcknowi»dged, and that he be informed that tie Council decline to receive it in the spirit in which it is written. Loin Mr Skey re water analysis. The Engineer stated that a fresh supply had been forwa.-ded.—From Mr Shrimpton re accumulation »f water at the junction of Palmerston Road wth Carnarvon Street, requesting that * few loads of gravel ba spread there. Re-
solved that the matter be attended to when Carnarvon Street is being made.—From Sect, to Fire Brigade, asking a further sum of £5 for repair of hose and gear. Resolved that the Engineer inspect t>e hose and report whether it is worth the expenditure.—From Mr Oxenham, asking permission to sink a well ac the corner of Gladstone Road and Roebuck Road. Granted, subject to Engineer’s supervision.—From I{. E. Johnstone re landing of cargo on foreshore. Referred to Collector of Customs, Wellington.—From S. M. Wilson re by-law affecting cabs. Resolved that the Council take steps to frame by-laws to meet the case. The Engineers’ and Wharf Committee’s Reports were then read and adopted. Payments to the amount of £4O were then passed.. Mr Nolan was appointed Solicitor to the Council. Councillor Whinray gave notice of motion for next meeting that a by-law be prepared for a cabstand and cabs. The Council then adjourned. A special meeting of the Council is convened for 6.45 p.m. on the 11th prox.
