[From our own Corrbspondbnts]. Wellington, March 24. It is stated that Mr A. Brogden, M.P., has received a cablegram requesting |him to return to England without delay, owing to the unsettled state of politics at Home. The Chatham Islands have been proclaimed a special Licensing District. Her Majesty’s Ex exequatur approving Dr. C. Kraefer, to be Consul General for Uid German Empire at Sydney, with jurisdiction in New Zealand, has been received, is notified in a Gazette. Napier, March 24. At the R. M.’s Court to-day Phillip Murtagh, race horse proprietor, was committed for trial on a charge of larceny as a bailee.
Concerning the recent Bend Or libel case, the Morning Post states that the defendant in the action obtained a rule airi for a new trial on the new grounds of misdirection and excessive damages. It has, however, become unnecessary to press for a new trial, the plaintiff having consented to accept a considerably reduced amount. The case has ndw been disposed of t hrough the instrumentality of Mr Justice Field. The same journal states that the Duke of Westminster has forwarded £5OO as his contribution towards the expenses incurred in defending the action.
