Wellington, March 22. At a meeting of the Executive Council today, the seal of the Colony will be formally affixed to the contract between the Government and the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company. The deed will then he forwarded to Christchurch to receive His Excellency’s signature. At a meeting of the committee of the benevolent institution yesterday, the Mayor read a letter he had received from a gentleman who did not wish his name declared, offering to give £lOOO towards a home for the p>nr and Ifc is expvoted that this
amount, together with the Government sub- i sidy of £l for every £l, will be sufficient to erect suitable buildings. Endeavors will be made, however, to raise another £lt?00 by subscription, the Mayor having promised to present £lOO provided nine others do the same. Hokitika, March 22. Another claim bottomed on gold yesterday, at Woodstock rush, with similar prospects to what was obtained by the prospectors. Twenty to thirty parties are now sinking, and a considerable number are shepherding claims. Dunedin, March 22. At the Supreme Court session, Lawrence, the Grand Jury threw out the bill against J. Smith, for stabbing. Patrick Butler charged with assaulting a litttle girl, was acquitted. Napier, March 32. A great deal of sickness prevails in Napier at present. It was reported on good authority this morning that over 300 cases of low fever are prevalent in town. A deputation waited on the Mayor to-day, to confer with him respecting the present sanitary condition of the town and prevailing sickness. The Mayor promised to summon a meeting. The Board of Health is asked to take steps as well to meet the exigencies of tbe ease.
