(FBOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS). Auckland, March 10. The Australia arrived from San Francisco at 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon, and went into quarantine. When she arrived she was flying a yellow flag for Health Officer. Dr. Philson boarded her, and found that measles broke out ten days after leaving. Five cases in all, but of a mild type. No deaths occurred. The Australia’s passengers for Auckland were landed at Motuihi, and the mails were brought up from Motuihi and fumigated, as they bad been kept in a separate part of the vessel. Southern. Cross Petroleum Company. Dunedin, March 10. The Times says that the Southern Cross Petroleum Company have no valid lease of the country where the petroleum is found, not half of the necessary signatures having been obtained. The Government having first incompleted the lease over the land. The Melbourne shareholders represented by Sir Charles McMahon, Messrs. Jack and Benies, are disgusted to find that the Native title has never been extinguished, and that the workmen have been driven off the ground by Native Chiefs. The conduct of the Gisborne Directors is strongly animadverted on, and there will probably be grounds for legal, proceedings. Sir Charles McMahon and Mr. Jack return to Melbourne by the Rotornaliana to consult Melbourne shareholders as to further proceedings.
