Wanganui Race Meeting.
(By Telegraph.) The first day’s meeting of the above Club took place on Thursday last, and was well attended. The weather was all that could be desired, and the course was in splendid order. The totalisator did a very good business, £2,267 being put through during the two days. The following arc the events: — Hurdle Race. J. H. Lunn’s Clarence 1 P. Butler’s Agent ... ... 2 Skylark 8
Only three started for this race, which waa an easy win for Clarence, who made all the running. The Agent came up at the finish, but did not succeed in passing the winner. Time, 5 mins. 4 secs. Wanganui Debbt. N. G. Morse’s Odd Trick... ... 1 C. A. Durie’s Taipo 2 Bonnie Doon 3 Eight horses faced the starter, Odd Trick being the favorite according to the totalisator. It was won easily. Time 2min 51sec. Out of £326 invested in the totalisator, 52 were on the winner. Sapling Stakes. Filly by Painter out of Geni ... 1 Amazon ... ... ... ... 2 Armourer 3 Twelve came to the post for this event, and after a little delay were got away to a good start, the Painter filly winning easily. Time Itnin 21sec. Wanganui Stakes. J. Westmacott’s Dauphin ... 1 P. Martin’s Virginia Water ... 2 W. Chittham’s Dan ... ... 3 Five started. It was a good race between the first two, the Dauphin winning on the post. Time, 3 min 54 secs. Town Plate. Craig and Goodman’s Sir Modred 1 T. Rae’s Camelia ... ... 2 W. Harrison’s Satanella ... 3 Only three started for this race which was robbed of all its interest, as Sir Modred cantered gently round, and won as he pleased. Flying Handicap. W. Walters’ Slander Filly ... 1 W. Chatham’s Dan 2 Craig and Goodman’s Somnus 3 This was a splendid race. On entering the straight and past the winning post, a sheet would have covered the three horses. Whips were freely used. Time, 2 mins 4 secs. SECOND DAY—Friday. The weather was again bright and clear for the races, and the attendance was greatly increased, the Grand Stand presenting rather a pretty appearance. The racing was very close all through. The following are the results: — Handicap Hubbles. P. Butler’s Agent... ... ... 1 Catch’em ... ... ... ... 2 Skylark 3 Clarence was scratched for this event. Totara also started, but he fell. The Agent was a hot favorite ; he was held back until the last half mile, when Lyford took him to the front, and won easily. T ime 4min 48sec. Hack Hurdles. Biggie’s Alaric 1 Eight others ran. Won easily, taking all the jumps iu graud style.; Maiden Plate. N. G. Morse's Odd Trick ... 1 W. R. Russell’s Kincraig ... 2 Bonny Doon ... 3 This was a very pretty race, but was won easily at the finish. Time, 2 mins 52 secs. Wanganui Cup. J. Powdrell’s Hailstorm ... 1 P. Martin’s Virginia Water ... 2 Westmacott’s Dauphin 3 Six horses faced the starter, and there was great excitement over the race, which was won easily. Time 4 min 13 sec.
