FIRE BRIGADE.
Tub meeting convened by the Mayor, and adjourned until last night, for further consideration of the Fire Brigade question, proved a perfect fiasco. The Mayor being specially conspicuous by his absence. When we went to press Air. File was speaking and advocating the formation ef a Brigade being left in the hands of forty-two gentlemen who petitioned for the convention of the original meeting, and expressed their willingness to serve in the Brigade The attendance was meagre, and there seemed to be a disposition to make a joke of the matter. It appears to us to be too considerable a question to be lightly treated. It certainly will not bear procrastination. Cavendo till us must be our constant watch cry. We cannot afford to “ chance ” any more fires and the sooner a wise and experienced hand goes to the wheel, the better will honest people sleep in their beds. What is to be done should be done quickly. A Fire Brigade must be formed, and procrastination will not aid us one jot. We cannot afford to fiddle while the city is burning. Won’t the Insurance Companies join issue with us in this ? [Since writing the above we learn that, the Mayor had sent an apology by Air. Townley for his unavoidable absence from the meeting, but that, gentleman arrived at the meeting late and had not delivered the apology when we left to go to press.]
