Reported Attempt on the Life of Her Majesty.

The startling intelligence received by us at a late hour last night, that an attempt had been made on the life of Her Majesty will cause a thrill of a horror in the breast of every loyal subject throughout the laud. The news to hand is that a report is current that the Queen was fired at at Windsor Station yesterday afternoon, but fortunately escaped unhurt. “ Uneasy lies the head that wears a Crown,” may well be said of every crowned head at the present time throughout the known world. If the rumor that Her Majesty has been fired at be true — and we are inclined to doubt it —to doubt that there is in the flesh a scoundrel so heartless as to fire at a feeble old lady —the effect upon Her Majesty’s health must indeed be severe. For it will be remembered that her health has been failing rapidly during the past years, and that from recent advices to hand her medical advisers had ordered that during this month she should proceed to Mentoni, in Italy, where, on the shores of the Mediterranean, she could, at that most picturesque of all places, enjoy complete rest, change of scene, and immunity from the excitement that would be bound to exist at Windsor Castle during the sitting of the British Parliament.
