Hawke's Bay Racing Club.
[By Teleobafh.] Napieb, March 3. The above Club’s annual meeting took place to-day on the Pakowhai racecourse, alter having been postponed for two days on account of the inclemency of the weather. To-day turned out fine, and was all that could be desired. The attendance was very poor, but the racing was good. The following are the events for the first day’s meeting. Maiden Plate, of 40 sovs. ; distance, 1| mile. Mr Heslop’s A G ... ... 1 Mr Martin’s Laird ... 2 Harikiki ... 3 This was a very close race, A G laying last the whole way until entering the straight, when he passed the Laird and won a good race by a neck. Time, 2min. 29secs. Flying Stakes, of 40 sovs., distance i-mile. P. Martin’s Mavis ... 1 Novelty ... 2 The starter succeeded in getting the horses well away, Novelty making all the running until entering the straight when Mavis collared her, winning by a length. Hack Race, of 15 sovs., distance 1 mile. Rangapo ... ... ... 1 Ten horses faced the starter for this and after some delay at the post, owing to some of the riders being in a hurry to getaway first, they were sent on their journey. It was won easily. Hawke’s Bay Cup, of 150 sovs., distance, 2 miles. W. Tatham’s Romeo ... 1 Mr Walter’s Slander Filly 2 — Soukar ... 3 This race was the event of the day, only four went to the starting post, it was a complete boil over, Romeo, who was well ridden, winning by two lengths. Distbict Handicap, of 50 sovs., distance, 1} miles. W. Broughton’s Hero ... 1 P. Martin’s Mavis ... 2 Mr Russel’s Sydney ... 3 This was a splendid race, Mavis, who was the favorite, getting no nearer than 2nd. Won by a length.
