Dunedin Jockey Club Autumn Meeting.
(By Telegraph.) Dunedin, Feb. 24. | The first day’s meeting of this club took place to day, and drew a large crowd of spectators, the weather being all that could be desired. Tho largo sum of £l,BlO was put through the 'olalisator, £2OOO being on tho Dunedin Cup alone. The police stopped all sweeps on the course, taking tho names of several of tho promoters, amongst whom were two Dunedin M.H.R.’s. The racing was very good | all through, there being some very i close finishes. The following are the ! results of the various events :— [ Handicap Hurdles of 80 sovs. P. Butler’s Agent... ... ... 1 I Trovatore ... ... ... ... 2 ■ J. Pilbrow’s Clarence ... ... 3 Roeket, Isaac, Dan, and Corrigan also ran. At a quarter of a mile from 'Lome there was a hat'd straggle for
first place, Trovatore having at last to give way to the big chesnut; it was a good race, all jumping well. Time, 4min. 32scc. Champagne Stakes of 150 sovs. Mr Horsford’s Nonsense Bst. 71b 1 Hon W. Robinson’s Vanguard, Bst 101 b 2 Mason and Vallance’s Turquoise, Bst 101 b 8 Armourer, Miss Kingfillv, Argolisby, Sotoekflwer, Taiaroa, andTe Ata also ran. This race was tnerelv between the first three, who had it all to themselves the whole distance, Nonsense eventually winning in a canter from her two companions. Time, Imiu. 18sec. Dunedin Cup, of 500 aovs. Lady Emma ... 1 Libeller... 2 Chancellor 3 King Quail, Mataku, Dauphin, Poet, Adamant, Hilda, Tasman and Nonpariel also ran. This was a magnificent race; a good start was effected, Mataku and Dauphin jumping awav with a lead of about five lengths, but were soon pumped, tho former cspe' cially; at the end of the first mile, and until the last |-mile from home, King Quail, Libeller and Chancellor were leading. Adamant then came up with Lady Emma, and a fine struggle ensued in the straight. However Lady Emma came along with a rush, getting well in front, and won a grand race by a length and a half, with some ease. Libeller beat Chancellor by a length for 2nd place. King Quail and Adamant were barely a dead heat for fourth place. Time, 3min. 55Jsecs. The victory of the winner was very popular. Great excitement prevailed. I’hesuin of £2171 was in the totalisator, only £lOl being on Lady Emma. Selling Race of 40 sovsMr P. Butler’s b h Laertes, Bst 21b (£3O) 1 The winner was sold by public auction immediately after, for tho sum of £3O. Publicans* Handicap of 80 sovs. Mr E. Cutt’s Nautilus ... ... 1 Mr P. Butler’s Luna ... ... 2 Titania also started. There was not much excitement over this event, as it was considered as good as a walk over for Nautilus, which proved to be the case, as she won in the commonest of canters. Time, 2tnin 20sec. Maiden Plate of 60 sovs.
Mr E. Lee’s Ace of Hearts colt 8»t lib 1 Mr H. Horsford’s Holderness 9st 2 Mr G. Onslow’s Brenda, 7st 131bs 3 Eight others started for this event; it was a, grand race between tho first two, both entering the straight whipping hard. Time, 2mins., 47sccs.
