The Waverly Hotel in Queen-street was discovered te be on fire at two o’clock this morning, and before the Fire Brigades succeeded in getting the flames under a considerable portion was completely gu<ted. The Hotel is the property of the City Council. The | insurances on the building are £lOO | in South British Office; £3OO in Na- ; tional Office. Samuel’s stock of i entlery which was damaged by water ; was insured in the Suu Office for £250. ; An endeavor is being made among I the sawmill workmen to form a Mill I Employees Union for the purpose of regulating the hours of labor. I Mr Buckland’s petition against the return of Major Harris is to be heard on the- 11th proximo. The suburban property at Kyber Pass in Fairburn’s estate was sold yesterday, at the rate of £1,300 an acre. Christchurch, Feb. 24. Mr. Pilliets old committee resolved to bring Mr. J. D. Andrews, formerly M.11.R. for Christchurch, forward as a candidate for Wakanui seat. Mr. J. C. Watson will not again offer himself for Wakanui for which he has been unseated, but at his invitation Mr A. Saunders, formerly member for Cheviot, has decided to come forward. Pictures to the number of 250 have been secured in Europe for the Art Gallery at the Exhibition. Nelson, February 24. The Jockey Club have announced a meeting for the 29th and 30th March. The amount offered in prizes is £365 ; the highest, being tho Nelson Jockey Club Handicap. Only 21 licenses for deerstalking which commenced last Monday, have been taken out. On Monday one shot two stags, and he obtained another two on Tuesday. Another sportsman shot three in two davs.
