(from our own correspondents). Dunedin, Feb. 13. Gorton has been scratched for all engagements at the Dunedin Autumn meeting. Sir C. M’Mahon, Sir J. O’Shannessy and other Melbourne shareholders in the Southern Cross Petroleum Company have arrived here on their way to visit the petroleum fields in Poverty Bay. Auckland, Feb. 15. The training schooner Kohimaratna proceeds south next week, in charge of Captain Gray, officer of Stewart’s Island, where she will be engaged in protecting the seal fisheries. Scarlet fever has broken out in Parnell. Two deaths have already occurred. r l he health officer stated that bad drainage and defective water supply are the causes. Wellington, Feb. 15. Mr Hunt, late Chief Secretary for Samoa, has instituted proceedings in the Supreme Court, Wellington, to recover £BOOO damages from His Excellency Sir Arthur Gordon, the High Commissioner of the Western Pacific, for alleged assault and false imprisonment. Mr E. Shaw of the firm of Brandon, Shaw and Brandon, has been retained as counsel for Mr Hunt, and Crown Solicitor; Mr 11. D. Bell will appear for His Excellency. Christchurch, Feb. 15. Mr Bcetham, R.M., has ruled that an entry in a book is not sufficient to constitute proof of debt unless supported by some outside evidence.
