Auckland, Feb. 13. The telegraph cable across the harbor was successfully laid by aid of the Custom’s launch and Harbor Board silt punt. One hundred cases of scarlet fever i are reported from Onehunga, and 121 deaths have occcurred. Fresh cases are daily reported. Bay of Islands, Feb. 13. j The Natives are indignant at the enforcement of law against selling spirits to the Natives, while at Whangarci the Maoris get as much drink as they can pay for. Nelson, February 13. A fire broke out during church hours last evening in centre range of stables occupied by Crewdson, Tramway proprietor, Thomas, cab proprietor, and Pickard, storekeeper. Crewdson had one horse burned to death, and one Cary tramcar was partially burned. The stables were completely destroyed, and Crewdson’s dwelling house and another building were with difficulty saved by the splendid force of water. A discovery of gold-bearing reef five feet thick, at Mount Owen, about 80 miles from town by present road, is reported. CtiRiSTCHURcn, Feb. 13. A sad accident occurred on Friday afternoon, near tho South Bridge. The wife of a farmer named Abbott was sitting in front of her house with three children, watching men at work, when a horse bolted with a dray, which capsized right on to the unfortunate woman. It was speedily lifted, but not before terrible injuries were inflicted on those underneath. Mrs Abbott sustained a compound fracture of the right arm, and a wound across the temple. The baby which she held all the time, had its arm broken. One girl was much bruised about the body. The little boy had his skull laid open and left side of body apparently paralyzed, and another girl, who was thrown under the horse, apppeared in danger of instant death, but strangely enough was rescued with scarcely any injury.
