[FROM OHB OWX COUBBSPONDENTS]. London, Jan. SI. The application! that hare been received for share! in the New Zealand Grain Agency exceed the amount required for the capital of the undertaking. Nicol Fleming, one of the defaulting directors of the Glasgow Bank, who absconded in 1878, bus returned to Scotland, and has been arrested. The Time* publishes an article to- day referring to tlie extensive grant voted annually by th 3 Victorian Parliament for public instruction in tliat Colony. It remarks that Australia needs arms more than brains, and considers tliat there is little fear that education “ill starve in the labour field, while the power is retained of magnificently rewarding the labourer. The panic on the French Bourse has been considerably allayed by the intervention of various European bankers, who have come to the assistance of the Lyons Bank and the other monetary houses affected. It is hoped that the assistance thus afforded will enable the French banks to tide over tho preseni difficulties, and resume operations. Feb. 1. A large and influential meeting was held today, at the Mansion House, for the purpose of taking steps to raise funds to assist the Russian jews. A powerful committee was appointed to carry out the object of the meeting, and £15,000 was subscribed iu the room. Paris, Feb. 1. Bouloux, the manager of the Union General Bank, which recently suspended payment, has been arrested in consequence of disclosures made in connection with the conduct of the affairs of that institution. Vienna, Feb. 1. The Austro-Hungarian delegates at their sitting to-day voted a War Credit of eight million florins (£800,000) to meet the expenses of the army despatched to quell the rising in the Southern Provinces. New York, Feb. 1. A largely attended public meeting was held here to-day. at which resolutions of sympathy with the position of the Lews in Russia were passed. It was also resolved to communicate ■with the Government, and request it to intercede with the Czar with a view to steps being taken to stay the persecution of the Jews in his Empire. Sidney, Feb. 2. A case of bushranging occurred to-day, at Crudine (sic.) The mail boy was stopped and robbed by an armed man, who then made off. Troopers have been despatched iu pursuit, but have not as yet succeeded in capturing him. Adelaide, Feb. 3. Since the fresh outbreak of small pox among the Garonne’s passengers, on Wednesday, no further case has been reported.
