Heavy rains from the south-west commenced last night, and still continue, and the ■cricket match will have to be postponed. Dunedin, Jan. 20. The Jury in the libel action Massey v. .Allen, £2,500 damages, on learning from the Judge that £5 would carry costs, gave a verdict for plaintiff for that amount. The Judge said it was the most curious of all verdicts he liad •ever heard. Invercargill, Jan. 20, Judgment was given in the B.M’s Court to-day in the case against Mr Daniel. M.H.R. for Wallace, who was charged with aiding and abetting a personation in the recent election, three charges were preferred and the Court held that the evidence in each case was sufficient to warrant a committal. Bail was allowed in £lOO, and two sureties of £5O each. Nelson, January 20. Capt. Cross /Harbor Master at this port who arrived from England in the ship Whitby in 1841, and discovered Nelson Harbor, died yesterday morning. He was the first white man who stepped ashore at Nelson, and was appointed Pilot by the N, Z. Company. From his first arrival he was never absent from the Colony, and was the last survivor of the expedition of men who came out in the Whitby.
