Last week’s issue of the Auckland Observer contains cartoons of several of the Members of Parliament representing electorates in the Auckland Provincial District. In every case the likenesses presented are truthful of the originals. .

A change haa taken place in the proprietary of the Roeeland Hotel, Makaraka. Mr J. R. Scott of the Maaonic Hotel, Napier, being the new occupant. Tins pleasantly situated hostelry, possessing the advantages it does, and replete with so many conveniences cannot fail to be a source of much public attraction. We understand that the new proprietor, Mr Scott, has spared no expense in refitting the establishment, and getting on hand a supply of liquors of a first-elas quality. Centrally situated as the Roseland Hotel is, and under its present able management it cannot fail in fully meeting with the wants of the travelling public. Messrs W. K. McLean and Wm. Ratcliffe who have been engaged during the past few weeks in auditing the accounts of the Borough Council, terminated their somewhat arduous duties on Monday evening last. There has been a complete overhauling of accounts, and a thorough examination made, extending over a period of several months past, It. is well that this has been done in order that the ratepayers of the Borough may obtain a dear and comprehensive knowledge of the actual financial position of our local Borough finances. When the council meets this evening the report of the Auditors, among other matters, will come on for discussion.

Mr M. Price, R.M., resumed duties to-day, after an enforced absence through illness extending over sometime. The laborious duties that have devolved upon our worthy Magistrate during l.ie term of office here, together with the painstaking manner in which he always carried those duties out, no doubt contributed in a marked degree to his lute illhealth. It would be a wise provision on the part of the Government if some arrangement could be made whereby the duties of the Resident Magistrate and Trust Commissioner might be lightened. At times the work to be done in our local R.M. Court? and Trust Commissioner’s Court, by Mr Price, has been of an extremely weighty character.

The Cook County Council will meet on Friday week, when the question of raising the proposed loan of £7OOO will be further gone into.

Mr M. Gallagher won £5OO, exclusive of the stakes, by the victory of Rawenata in the Auckland Hurdle Race. The bookmakers had a bad time of it in Auckland, and at the wind up of the day’s sport two or three of them were several centuries to the bad.

The victory of King Quail in the Auckland Cup was very popular, the son of Yattendon being the “ public horse.” Mr S. T. Horsfall, who owns him, wins a good bit by the win of bis horse.

With 7st 21hs in the Dunedin Cup, King Quail must be reckoned to have a chance second to none. Mr Horsfall has taken one wager of 1.000 to 2, laid by Mr Snider, about the little horse fortlie three Cups—Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin,
