The decision of the County Council, on Friday night last, not to accept the specifications in the Oxenham contract for metal from Ormond, as amended at Mr Oxenham’s request, by the Borough Council, leaves the question of the gravel supply for the town during the ensuing winter in statu quo. There can be no doubt that there is an earnest desire on the part of both Councils to co-operate as cordially as possible in this matter, but they are powerless to come to ary final arrangement, so long as the contractor himself demurs to one single clause in the specifications. There must, as we all know, be at least two parties to a bargain, and it is the duty of each to honestly protect his own interests. But the final solution of the Ormond gravel contract problem seems to be as far off as ever. There appears to be a hitch somewhere about the original contract. If there be a difficulty in the way, perhaps it would be better for all parties to face it at once; instead of needlessly endeavoring to stave off the evil day.
