[From oub own Corbespondentb]. Melbourne, Jan. 5. The passengers of the Garonne, to the number of 300, have been quarantined here. It is believed that fresh cases of smallpox have broken out among them. January 9. Two fresh cases of smallpox have occurred amongst the Garrone’s passengers. Other sufferers are progressing favorably towards recovery. Sydney, Jan. 9. H.M.S. Nelson, Commodore Erskine, to relieve H.M.S. Wolverine, as flagship, arrived to-day. Three boats capsized m the harbor on Saturday last, and two boys drowned. London, Jan. 6. Relations between Turkey,' Austria, and
Germany have lately assumed a most friendly tone and growing entente between the two empires are daily becoming more marked. January 7th. A very severe storm has been experienced ‘Over great parts of Scotland, during the past 24jhours. The wind blew with hurricane force, and proved -most disastrous in many places. Seven casualties are reported at sea. Intelligence is to band of . the .complete destruction of the lighthouse at Port Ellen on the Coast of Islay The supply of fresh butter brought from Melbourne in the Refrigerating Chambers of the steamship Euorpo, recently, has been examined and found to be in excellent condition.
It has transpired that the Government propose to adopt stringent measures to check the sale of Are arms in Ireland, and that provision will shortly be made for the punishment of persons supplying rifles or -ether weapons in disturbed districts. Mr Forster, Chief Secretary far Ireland, proceeds, to-morrow, to Osborne, where the Queen is now staying, and it is understood that Council will be held to approve of the measures to be adopted. The National Bank of New Zealand has declared a dividend of three per cent, for past half-year.
Paris, Jan. 7. Negotiations between the English and French Commissioners for the conclusion of the French Commercial Treaty have now' been finally broken off, aud Mr Cross, the British Delegate, has returned to Loudon, Paris papers to-day, in their leading articles on the subject of the termination of the negotiations, almost unanimously profess anxiety that (.he treaty should be concluded between England aud Frum’fe. Vienna, Jan. 6. Intelligence is to hand, from the Southern Dalmatia, that the agitation among the inhabitants of that district is daily increasing, and fears of general rising are entertained. The Austrian Government, has accordingly despatched a force of 7000 troops to the threatened disturbance. Albany, Jan. 7. The P. & 0. Company’s steamship Khedive with the Suez Mails, which left London on Dec. Ist, have arrived at King George’s Sound this morning.
