The steamer Wakatu, which arrived from Wanganui this morning, struck on the rooks near Terawhiti, while the second mate wm in charge; the voom! is malting water fast, it being supposed that one of her plates is split; the pumps are bard at work. After discharging she will go on the slip. Auckland, January 6. Sibbim' Auction Mart wm completely gutted by fire thio morning. In the Supreme Court, Hefferman wm charged with an indecent assault. Dunbwn, Jan. 0. A seven roomed bosrding house occupied by Mrs Cmwford in Cumberland Street, wm destroyed by fire thio morning. The house belonged to the Hon. Mr Mantel). In the Supreme Court to-day the following sentences were passed :—John Reardon for fraudulent bankruptcy six months’ imprisonment; James Watson, for larceny, 2 years ; John Dupree, police constable, for stealing fowls, two years ; Frank Thompson, for robbery, three years. Patea, January, 4. Mr Sherwood, Mayor, has announced his intention to prosecute the News for libel. Opunake, Jan. 4. J. Henry, a coach driver, has been arrested for stabbing a stableman on Sunday last Wellington, Jan. 4. In the Supreme Court this morning, G. T. Skinner was sentenceed to 12 month's imprisonment, for forgery. The charge against Mr and Mrs Morey and Elizabeth Stewart, for robbery is proceeding. Chbistchubch, Jan. 4. A petition has been lodged agaainst the return of Mr H. Allwright, M.H. R., for Littleton, the ground of objection being that several aliens voted for him.
