Volunteer Intelligence.

The monthly inspection of the Head Quarters Detachment of J Battery was held at the Drill Shed, on Thursday evening. There was a very fair attendance, and the Band played several popular airs with their usual ability. Capt. Winter put the Company through skirmishing and other exercises.

The following Battery orders were read to the parade : — “ It is notified for general information that the following persons have beendismissed from the N.Z.Volunteer Service: —1. Gunner John Arnal, M Battery Artillery Volunteer Regiment, on August Bth, 1881, for disobedience of orders. 2. Private James Hunter, Waimea Rifles, on A ugust Bth, 1881, for repeated absence from parades, and disobedience of orders. 3. Corporal Nicholas Carl Schumacher, L Battery Artillery Volunteer Regiment, for insubordinate conduct while on duty under arms.”

“ The Battery will hold a Church parade at 10.15 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. Ist, 1882. Slung pouches, waist belts, and side arms only to be worn, which are expected to be in proper and cleanly order.” “ It is notified for general information that the sum of £lO is set apart by the Government for prize firing in this district for. ihig viz., £5 Is.

for carbine competition, and £4 16b. for ordnance firing.”

j“ The prize firing will take place at the (Range on Wednesday, 25th Jan., 1382 ; firing to commence at 1.30 p.m., ranges 200,300, and4ooyar<ft, 7 shots at each range ; first prize £2 45., second £1 10s., third £l, fourth 10s. No member will be allowed to compete unless all dues to the corpß be paid. Ordnance firing, Wednesday, 18th Jan., at 1.30 p.m.; first prize £3 65., second £1 10s.”

After the parade had been dismissed, the Finance Committee met, and disposed of a mass of business of a routine nature. Among other things it was decided to have the platform of the big gun repaired, and a buoy fixed in the Bay, that practice may be held on Wednesday next, at 2 p.m.
