THE HALF-HOLIDAY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,- —I noticed in a recent issue of the St and aed, a notice signed by several merchants in Gisborne, to the effect that their places of business would remain open on each Wednesday afternoon as usual, meaning, I presume that the half-holiday w T as at an end. Last Wednesday, I had occasion to come into town, and being under the impression that business places would be open in the afternoon, I brought in my dray to take out some goods I was urgently in need of. You may judge of my surprise, when I arrived in town, about 1.30 p.m., to find the shops closed, and I was unable to obtain what I came for. Now, Sir, I don’t object to the halfholiday, if it is carried out in a proper manner; but it seems to me that the employees do not trouble about us country people ; they seem to be under the impression that if it is known in town that the half holiday is to be continued, it is sufficient. Had it been notified in the Standard (the only paper we see here) that the Wednesday half-holiday still continues, it would have saved me an unnecessary journey and waste of time. If the merchants wish to study their customers, they should see that the country folk are duly informed as to opening and closing their shops.—Yours, &c., Patutahi.
