THE IRISH LAND BILL.
The clause in the Land Bill by which the emigration of the distressed Irish peasantry to the Colonies and America is to be assisted by Government grants has given risen to a good deal of comment, both here and in Ireland, and the general feeling unquestionably is that the scheme is neither advantageous nor practical. The emigration clauses have, however, awakened a new interest in emigration, and they will, probably, give a new impetus to the numbers leaving England for less crowded countries. While we are Anxious to increase, Germany on the other hand seems anxious to decrease the number of her emmigrants, and it is said Prince Bismarck is meditating the adoption of very stringent measures to check or suppress the love of leaving their fatherland which seems to be the ruling passion with the Prussian peasantry. The following figures, which show the proportions in which the various European nationalities contributed to the 327,371 immigrants who landed in America last year, will be read with interest, as showing how extensively Germans and Irish are entering into the population of the United States :—
The total number was a good deal higher than had been reached in any previous year: but judging from the first quarter in the present year, it is estimated by the United States Emigration Commissioners that in 1881, independent of any influx from Ireland as the result of State aid, last year’s figures will be surpassed, and the total immigrants exceed 500,000. At this rate, despite the vast extent of her undiscovered territory, America will soon get overstocked, and the surplus-popu-lation of Europe will have to go further a-field t<> find those homes they cannot form in their native countries.
