Napier, Dec. 16. In the Supreme Court to-day, Samuel W. Peddle, charged with cattle stealing, a verdiet of not guilty was returned. William Ebbett, indicted for indecently and feloniously assaulting Sarah Ann Clarke at Waipawamate, was acquitted. Mr Buchanan has been officially declared elected for Napier.
The official declaration for the East Coast Maori District is as follows :— Henare To wo ana 900 Boogers ... ... ... 727 Wi Pere ... ... ... 630 Ngata ... ... ... 488
For the Waipawa District, the official declaration is : Smith, 579 ; Ormond, 554.
At the Civil Sittings of the Supreme Court to-day, Barker v. Bees, a suit for £405 for moneys advanced in law stamps on land transactions, a verdict for £155 was given; the balance is left for future arrangement.
Patea, December. 15.
A six-roomed cottage, the property of Salmon, Builder, Kakaramea, was burnt last evening ; the house is insured for £lOO in the Union office; &50 in the National office ; and the furniture £5O in the latter office. Nothing was saved.
Invercargill, Dec. 15.
The Beturning Officer for Wallace, after several scrutinies of the returns, declared Mr Daniells elected by a majority of one. The Beturning Officer’s action and decision has caused considerable comment, and probably Mi’ Hirst, the defeated candidate, will take the matter into the Electoral Court.
Dunedin, Dec. 15.
Government has accepted the Westport Company’s tender for the supply of 30,000 tons coal for railway purposes, during the year 1882. A rchibald Watson residing at Woodhaugh was killed last night by a tree he was felling, falling on him.
Blenheim, Dec. 16.
A man named Henry Boyce was killed in the Wairau Valley, yesterday, by the upsetting of a wool dray, which he was driving. He leaves a wife and four children.
Wellington, Dec. 16.
The Beturning Officer for Thorndon to-day laid an information against the Hon. C. J. Pharazyn for plural voting at the recent election. Informations were also laid against two electors for South Wellington on similar charges. The cases will be heard on Thursday next. A man named South, laborer, of Alfredton, has been arrested at Masterton, on a charge of voting twice at Wairarapa North elections. Christchurch, Dec. 16. The fallow deer, recently imported by the Acclimatisation Society, are to be liberated on the Canverden Bun in the Amuri District.
The weather still continues most unseasonably dry.
