Captain Porter at Napier
(From the Hawkes Say Herald.) Captain Porter met last evening, at the Criterion Hotel, several of the East Coast electors resident in Napier. The meeting was not a regularly coiistituted one, but was merely of a colt-, versational character, Captain. Ported explaining that having-' viiitbd iihfl spoken in ot her parts,or .the district he thought it only fair he should place himself in communication with those electors who were resilient here, so as to give them'an bppofturiity of questioning him as to his views. In answer to enquiries Captain Porter stated that he was not in favor of having the Bible read in the public schools, and would oppose any attempted infringement of the present Act. The erection of a breakwater at Poverty Bay was one of the cardinal features of his policy, and he would decidedly see that it was pushed forward if he were elected, lie would have no hesitation whatever in assisting the Hawke’s Bay members to have a breakwater constructed here. He considered that there was such an identity of interests between the two districts as to make it very desirable that the members ofllawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay should work together in unity. If they united it would go a long way in carrying whatever was desired. He was decidedly in favour of roads being constructed in those districts where railways could not be got. The proceedings were altogether very brief, and the gathering dispersed after those present had acknowledged Captain Porter’s courtesy in meeting them.
