(from our own correspondents). Napier, Nov. 2. Edward Stubley, acting station, master at Te Ante, died suddenly at the Napier Terminus Hotel this morning. Deceased leaves a widow and large family. Mr Sydney Johnson invites the electors to meet him ot the Oddfellows’ Hall, Waipawa, on Monday next. Latest from the Front. ’•. Opunake Nov. 2. A large Native meeting was held at Parihaka to-day, at which about 1500 men arid women attended. Te Whiti and Tohu spoke for three hours ; both recommended peace. Te Whiti said the dav of attack would be the salvation of his people. The object of the meeting was to gather the people of Parihaka together, so that they might not be molested. He said Abel was not killed like a man, but like,a pig, and if they resisted they would be killed like pigs. All men, women, and children were to assemble on the Marae when the troops advanced. If any became frightened, and. rushed for guns, they had better shoot themselves. If any ran into the bush, they would be lost. There was nothing to fear, they could not arrest them ; but Tohu said perhaps they might- be taken, having instigated them to opposition. Hiroki was present. Te Whiti said they would not submit, and described his sacred land on a blanket.

Visitors were treated very civilly ; and food was prepared for them.

The Nelson corps arrived at Rahohu yesterday, having left the six-pounder Armstrong at Pungarehu. The Wellington Navals marched this morning for Rahohu; they have improved much since they came up. The Constabulary at Pungarehu are being knocked into shape, and getting a knowledge of the country.

The Stella arrived yesterday, after having landed fifty officers and men from Canterbury, and proceeded to Wellington at 11.30. The p.s. Manawatu landed 162 all ranks yesterday, from Wanganui and Rangatikei districts—Captains Hall and Lethbridge are in command of the latter, Captain Hammersly being in charge of the Canterbury men. Major Noaks arrived last night. Arrangements for landing, and forwarding trodps and stores are efficiently carried out by Captain Taylor, A.C., and S. C. Anderson, the defence storekeeper. Dunedin, Nov. 2. Mr. Downie Stewart is now definitely out for Dunedin West. Cameron’s £5,250 sweep on the Melbourne Cup,'first prize goes to'Christchurch ; second to Invercargill, third to Queenstown. Auckland, Nov. 2. Lady Wynyard, widow of a former Lieut. Governor of the Colonv, died here this morning. It is reported here that a boat of the wrecked vessel Rona has been found at Te Kopuru, with a dead body made fast to the stern ringbolt. Wellington, Nov. 2. The Hinemoa and Stella arrived from Opunake this morning; the former vessel leaves again for Opunake this afternoon with volunteers. Mr. Johnston, candidate for Te Aro, addressed the electors last night, and received a vote of confidence. The Hinemoa sailed “for Opunake to-day with 200 officers arid men of the Wairarapa Rifles, City Guards, Naval Brigade and City Rifles.
