<FBOK OUS OWN CORRESPONDENTS). WAIROA, Oct. 28. Mr. Frank Davis, of the firm of J. T. Large and F. Davis, proprietors of the Wairoa Guardian, expired on Wednesday morning last, of heart disease and consumption, at the early age of 23, after nine month’s illness. Mr. Davis's demise is generally regretted. The funeral took place on Thursday, the body being followed to the grave by a large concourse of people, including the principal settlers of the district. All places of business were partly closed. The Foresters, of which the deceased was a member, marched in procession, and bore the body part of the way to the Cemetery. Auckland, Oct. 28. Great dissatisfaction is manifested .at Theodore Brown’s £lO,OOO sweep on the Melbourne Cup not having been drawn yet. On Tuesday the new Act comes into force, when it will be illegal to do so. Wellington, Oct. 28.

Mr. Bryce has gone to Opunake to interview Major Atkinson. It is reported that Te Whiti disapproves the action of the Natives in destroying fences and stopping drays. * Mr. W. B. Edwards, solicitor, is a candi- - date for South Wellington. The Engineers offered their services to go to the front as a rifle corps, and have been accepted by the Government; they proceed to Opunake on Sunday. ’ Mr. Bryce to-day sent Te Whiti a letter saying that on Saturday the sth November, he will go to Parihaka for his (Te Whiti’s) answer to the proclamation. Te Whiti received his visitor politely, but declined to touch the leater, saflng he had had enough of letters. Its contents were explained to him, on which he said, ’* Let him come, he will find no fortifications.” Roberts, New Zealand Militia, has been appointed to the command of White Cliffs, New Plymouth, and Cape . Egmont Militia Districts. When Captain Gudgeon and Major Stapp read the proclamation at Manaia to Tito Kowaru, the wily old Native is reported to have asked for the loan of a few shillings, but the Major declined. Opunake Oct. 27. The Wellington Naval Brigade arrived this morning. Oct. 28. The Constabulary marched from here to Pungarehu this morning, the navais, in the meantime occupying the garrison. Mr. Bryce, Colonel Roberts and Major Atkinson have proceeded to Pungarehu. There is an absence of Natives there. The Opunake Rifles are about building a fortification. Wanganui, Oct. 28. The Alexandra Cavalry, 52 strong, under Captain Somerville, left Wanganui to-day for the front. The troop are well mounted, and E resent a very fine appearance. The infantry ave by steamer on Saturday. New Plymouth, Oct. 28. The two Maoris who were arrested for insulting Mr Bryce, were liberated at daylight yesterday morning, after being admonished for their misconduct. Major Atkinson, and Captain Holme arrived last evening from Opunake. Nelson, October 28. At a parade of Volunteers last night, about 130 townsmen were present, including the Naval Brigade. The men were examined by Dr. Boor, seventeen being rejected. It is expected that, with the country corps, at legist 150 men will leave for Opunake to-night by the Hinemoa.
