Borough Council.
At the ordinary meeting of the Council on Tuesday night last, the following business was transacted:—
Tubanganvi Febby.—An application was read from Mr. Ledger re this service, and the Council decided upon accepting the offer to carry on the ferry up to January Ist, 1882, for the sum of £7. Fiee Engines.—Offers were received from Messrs. Parnell and Boylan, and Common and Co. to supply fire-engines for the Borough. The Council decided to consider‘the matter.
Watebworks. — Mr. Morrin, of Auckland, forwarded a telegram to His Worship declining to go on with the Waterworks scheme. A letter was also received from Messrs. McLean, Brothers, and Rigg, on the same subject, but the Council agreed to let the matter stand over until the analyses of the samples of water forwarded to Wellington are returned. McDowell’s Claim.—Mr. Brassey was authorized to appear in answer to a summons for £B3 ss. lOd. against the Council.
Ballast of Road.—The Town Clerk was instructed to reply to a letter, re - ceived from the Cook County Council, complaining of the ballasting of the tramway between Makaraka and Read’s Gate, to the effect that the portion of the road referred to was entirely under the control of the County. Sinking Fund.—The following resolutions were carried :—“ That the Council do advertise for offers to borrow the sum of £7OO Sinking Fund, subject to conditions to be settled by the Finance Committee, such offers to be sent in by next meeting.” “ That the Sinking Fund Commissioner be informed that the Council agrees to the charge of 5 per cent collection of interest, but cannot accede to the charge of 1 per cent, procuration fee, as the Council undertakes the seeking of securities.” Tendebs : —Williams’ tender £65, and Bougen’s tender £77 10s for spreading soil on Palmerston Road were both rejected as being too high. The following tenders for drain in Derby-street were received :— Me Carthy (accepted), £l3 3s. ; Petersen, £l4 17s. 6d.; Taylor, £22 ; Wilkinson, £l5 17s. Medical Repost.—Dr. Pollen sent a very favourable report on the prevailing sickness, and urged the publication of certain clauses of the Public Health Act, for public information. Town Clebk’s Resignation.—lt was resolved that the resignation of the Town Clerk be accepted, the duties of the same to terminate on the 30th of November next ; and that applications for the appointment be advertised for, to be sent in by next meeting. Palmebston Road.—lt was resolved to call for fresh tenders for soiling this road. Stbeet Dbiving.—The Ranger was instructed to see Mr. Stevenson re driving horses loose through the town. Notices oi Motion.—Cr. Piesse gave notice to move—“ Complaints having been made of damage done to footpaths in Childers-street, the attention of persons driving horses through the public streets be drawn to Section 12 of Bye Law No. 3, with the amendment thereto, ‘ That in accordance with Section 331 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1876, this Council shall consider the advisability of providing such appliances as are necessary to enable the inhabitants of the Borough to enjoy bathing.’ ”
