Early Closing Association.

A meeting of those persons interested in the above took place in the Masonic Hotel, last Wednesday evening, to receive the report of the Committee appointed to canvas the town to obtain the consent of Merchants and others for a half-holiday every Wednesday. The Committee reported that all the principal merchants had agreed to close at 1 o’clock every Wednesday afternoon. The following notice was then drawn up, and approved of by those present“ Early Closing Association, Gisborne.—The business people of Gisborne having unanimously agreed to close their respective places of business every Wednesday, at 1 p.m., on and after Wednesday, 2nd November, the employees respectfully ask the public to use their best endeavors to support this movement by transacting their business before 1 p.m., on Wednesday.” ’ It was resolved that a hearty vote of thanks be passed to the President, Captain Porter Vice-President, Mr. E. K. Brown, the Rev4| Mr. McAra, T. W. Carr, and J. Somervell, for the energetic manner in which they obtained the signatures of the employers, merchants, and others ; and also a hearty vote of thanks to the merchants and storekeepers for responding to the wishes of the employees. Resolved “ That the half-holiday come into operation on Wednesday, the 2nd Nov. Resolved—“ That a call of 2s 6d be made for expenses.” Resolved—■“ That the opening day be celebrated by a drive into the country in the afternoon, and that a tea meeting and promenade concert be held in the evening.” The following Committee was appointed to carry out the arrangements :—Messrs. Cook, Goldsmith, Usher, Cantie, Moore, Carter, and Quigley.
