Commercial.

Messrs. Ratcliffe & Piesse report upon the operations of the market during the past fortnight, as follows There has been a slight demand for shares in the Southern Cross Petroleum Company, at 25., sixth call paid, but very little business done. South Pacific’s have been put into the market for sale at 2s. 6d., fifth call paid, but there are no buyers, at that price, for this stock at*present. Doubtless the fact of the Directors of the last mentioned* Company having made a call of 6d. per share, and decided to inflict fines on shareholders for the non-payment of past calls ; and, also, on account of the Directorate still being resident at Sydney, debars speculators from investing in this stock ; and some change will have to take place in the management of this Company before the codfidence of the public will be restored.
