PORT OF POVERTY BAY. Arrivals.—October. 2nd. —Rotorua, s.s., Captain Tozer, from Melbourne via Southern Ports. Passengers : — Mrs. Brown, Messrs. Towsey, W. Graham, Morris, Carrol, McGill, Speight, Griffiths, Blyde, Pattull, Brown, and Capt. Preece. 3rd.—Gisborne, schooner, Captain Skinner, from Auckland via the coast. 4th. —Oreti, s.s., Captain Campbell, from Auckland. Departures.—October. 2nd. —Rotorua, s.s., Capt. Tozer, for Auckland. Passengers : —Miss Krippner, Miss McLeod, Major Westrupp, Messrs. Longdale, Rowe, Clarke, Broadhurst, Saunderson. The s.s. Oreti is on the berth for Auckland, leaving to-day, weather permitting. The fore-and-aft schooner Gisborna, Capt. Skinner, arrived from Auckland, via the coast, on Monday last. The Gisborne is a full vessel, her cargo consisting of coals and timber. Captain Skinner is to be congratulated on the possession of a very fine vessel. A cablegram has been received stating that the steamship City of Sydney left San Francisco for Auckland on Sunday, September 25th, being one day after time-table date. She may be expected to arrive on Monday, 17th October.

Captain Nelson Hector, who has recently been promoted to the command of the P. and O. Company's magnificent steamship Carthage, was once a pupil of St- John’s College, Auckla id, and entered on a nautical career aboard. Bishop Selwyn’s little schooner Undine. According to adviees re the Union S.S Company in these parts, the Taiaroa will be placed on the Auckland-Fiji trade for the present, and every effort will be made to extend the trade between Auckland, Fiji, and other South Sea Islands. The Union Company intend endeavoring to get a mail subsidy from the New Caledonian authorities, whereby the ’Frisco mail could be taken direct from Auckland to Noumea, instead of the present roundabout route, via Sydney. The Company are rapidly extending their business, having five new steamers in the builders’ hands. Two of these may be expected to arrive in the Colony before the new year, and when this extensive addition to the fleet is in New Zealand waters, the directorate intend having a weekly service with Sydney. During the coming summer, cheap excursion tickets will be issued to and from Australia.
