cook counts Council.
A special general meeting of 4 thia Cooncil took place on Friday night last, to consider a motion- inade by Cr. Chambers as to. the advisability of the Council raising a special loan ;“but as some p£ the parties interested in other matters werepresent, the question.of “ cut gauges ” but no decision was arrived at, Mr. Humphries, the maker of the gauges, and the County Engineer rung the changes of complaint one on the other, and the Council did not feel confident in placing the responsibility on anyone. So that is the way that matter was disposed of, at least so far. Mr. Ross’s cKdrge re Ormbnd road metal was then gone into, Cr. Porter leading the way by informing the Council that when he went to Wellington recently, he submitted the Engineering plans and specifications of the work to Mr. Blackett, ColoniaTEngineer, and related to him the nature of the charge brought by Mr. Ross against the Council and its Engineer. Mr. Blackett’s opinion was that, although there was ,a discrepancy between the plan and specification, it was immaterial, and would not affect the contract, while he, Cr. Porter, wa» glad to find Mr. Blackett’s calculations exactly fitted into those given by Mr. Reynolds, the Engineer consulted by the Council; and if the papers wcr6 published, it ivofild satisfy the public that not only were Mr. Ross's charges incorreer; but that the Council and the Engineer had been vindicated.
The Council had placed before them the matter of raising the salary of the Slaughter-house Inspector. A report of the Waihau Accommodation House Committee was read. It recommends applications be invited from anyone willing to embark in the enterprise. The area of land, given to be 200 acres for a. term of 21 years, rent’free. Theapplieants shall state the extent of, house, paddock, and other necessary accommodation,, he will afford as required by the Licensing Act, relative to busK*' inns. As a guarantee of good faith applicants shall submit>the names of two sureties that the stipulated amount of accommodation shall be afforded within six months from acceptance of a tender. That the Wairoa County Council shall be furnished with this resolution, and shall also invite applications to be in by October 20th, next. The loan question was then discussed r but its present settlement did not seem to find favor with Councillors. Some thought it would be better to relegate it to the incoming Council, while one Councillor said it should be made an election question. Ultimately the following resolution was decided on.- “ That the Council consider it advisable to raise a loatA for the purpose of metal supply, and th>t a Committee consisting of Crs. Porter, Chambers, and Graham, be appointed as a Committee of Ways and Means, and have full power to ascertain particulars necessary for the,-information of the Council, the report to be submitted at next meeting.” , ,
