London, August 23. The August-September series of Colonial wool auctions opened to-day. There was a good attendance of home and foreign buyers. Wools were weaker ; cross-breds, faulty ; and scoured sorts being one half-penny to one penny below the closing rates of last auctions. In the House of Commons, the question was put to the Premier as to whether the Government intended to introduce a Bill to amend the English Land Act during next Session. In reply, Mr. Gladstone stated that he could not promise that such a measure would be brought on next Session. 25th August. Intelligence is to hand from Ireland announcing that serious rioting has taken place in several towns in the County of Limerick between the police and the people. The awards (o, colonial exhibitors at the International Wool Show at the Crystal Palace, are announced .- —For washed, crossbreds, and combing wool, the Government of New Zealand first ; Messrs. Simmon, Wilson, and Russell, and the Government of New Zealand 2nd ; Messrs. John Ware (Victoria) and Carter 3rd. A grand review of Volunteers took place today, at Edinburgh, before the Queen. Over 40,000 men were under arms. Parliament will be prorogued on Saturday next. Heavy rains continue to fall throughout England, and are causing severe damage by flood ; it is proving most disastrous to harvesting operations. Washington, August 23. To-day’s bulletin reports President Garfield’s condition materially improved. The fits of vomiting have ceased; and he is again able to take food through his mouth.
