We learn that Mr McDougall is a man of superior attainments in his profession, and will, doubtless, be a valuable addition to ’the long robes of Gisborne. From recent advices to hand we learn that the 15,000 shares m the Southern Cross Petroleum Company, placed by Mr. Clarke in the Melbourne market, were all applied for in the space of two hours, and active demands made for more. Mr. W. IT. Flood notifies that ho wiU pay Poverty Bay a short visit by the steamer, arriving from Napier on Sunday next. As Mr. Flood’s stay in Gisborne will be of short duration he requests that all orders, especially those from the country may be left at our office. * As will be seen from our advertising columns, it is pronosed to hold a Bazaar, Gift Auction, and Promenade Concert, in aid of the funds of the Poverty Bay Presbyterian Church, at Makaraka, in November next. We understand this will take the place, this year, of the annual soiree, formerly held. Fuller particulars of the coming event will be published shortly. On Saturday last the R.M. investigated two criminal charges. One against Rainbow for the “ constructive ” larceny of a £5 note, not his own, and for which he was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment at Napier. The other was a boy named Harrison, who for a similar offence was sentenced to imprisonment for 14 days. DR. HITCHENS may be consulted at tho ARGYLL daily. 307 Amongst the Parliamentary papers furnished to us by the last mail from AYellington is the fourth annual report of the Minister of Education. It is a most voluminous and comprehensive report, containing about 200 foolscap pages—enough to frighten any newspaper man—-besides appendices, statistics and tables. It is at the service of any one requiring its perusal. A telegram was received yesterday morning by the secretary of our local club from She Napier Football Club, informing him that a team would leave Napier for Gisborne on the 4th, ahd play here on Saturday, the 6th of August, and already the members of the Gisborne Chib are making the most of the time to get themselves into condition, for the town contingency of the expected team are to commence morping walks out and runs home and every afternoon will roll up to practice some improvement on their kicking abilities, so that we may expect to see our team in fairly good condition by Saturday week. It is pro posed to charge. a small fee for admission on the day of the match, and a Christy Minstrel entertainment is on the top* to raise funds to entertain our Napier rivals on the football held. From a Napier exchange we learn that the judgment in the recent case of Ellis v. T- x- n j° n Shipping Company has been satisfied. It will be remembered' that last 09*7 Ellis B,letl fclie company for 1 Is 6d, tbe amount of loss sustained by the Loojum-Sir Donald collision. Judgment was given in favor of Mr Elbs, but counsel tor defendant intimated an intention to appeal on a law point. The time having expired for entering the appeal, Mr Ellis applied for a judgment warrant, which was executed yesterday by the bailiff, who, entering the office of the company, and demanded the keys of the safe from the agent. From the safe the bailiff took the sum required, and the Clerk of the Court handed the amount over to Mr Ellis this morning. Yesterday Mr Lascelles telegraphed to say that he had obtained an injunction from the Supreme Court at Wellington, but as no information of the kind has been received by the Court here, judgment had to be satisfied. rpilE Marvel of tho Age.
