Borough Council.

The sitting of the Council took place on Tuesday evening last. There was no very important business transacted. < A leave of absence for one month was granted to the Borough Engineer, Mr. J. Drummond. Mr. O’Ryan acting iirihis stead, in the meantime. It was decided to carry the drainage from Grey to Cobden-street on both sides of Gladstone Road with open crossings at the Glad-

stone and Childers Road. Tenders for the work to be called for, to be in by noon on Saturday, and to be decided on by the Public Works Committee. The following tenders were accepted : — A. Robb, for Peel-street, 18s per chain • do., for Bright-street, 17s per chain ; do., Childers Road, 21s per chain ; McDevitt, Custom-house-street, 12s 9d per chain. On the motion of Cr. Piesse, seconded by Cr. Whinray, it was decided to plant willows on the river bank on the line of Read’s Quay. Ble motion was opposed by Crs. Townley and Clayton. Tree planting seems to be an objectionable way of spending money, ] according to some of the Councillors, for we find that Cr. Whinray proposed—“ That the Council sanction the planting of 500 trees, poplars and blue gums, in Gladstone Road, starting from Read’s Quay, and that Crs. Piesse, Berry and Whin ray be appointed a committeej|to superintend * the planting. Cr. Townley moved as an amendment that the trees be not planted. He did not think the Council were justified in spending ratepayers’ money in this way.— Cr. Clayton also opposed the tree planting. We are, however, glad to find that the original motion was carried on the casting vote of the Mayor. It seems to be a pity that more unanimity does not exist on so trifling a matter tending at once to beautify and adorn the town, and add to its salubrity, while so much is wasted in spasmodic at" tempts at engineering. The formation of the footpath’on one side of Palmerston Road was delayed for the estimate of the Engineer. It was resolved that the Public Works Committee do consider the matter of expense re shingling footpaths. During the last year the sum of £SOO 9s 3d had been expended on this work, one-half of which, it was understood was to be borne by owners of property.
