WITNESSES’ EXPENSES.**
TO THE EDITOR. Sn?, —I beg to draw your attention to the following matter. On Friday morning I was I ologa Bay, and had my horse ready to start for my home at Tokomaru. A subpoena to me, as a witness, was served on me just as I was about to start, requiringjme to attend the Resident Magistrate’s Court at Tologa Bay on that same day. I was thus detained a whole day and night, I was thus pnt to an expense, out of pocket, of nine shillings, besides my loss of time. I was allowed by Capt. Preece, R.M., only six shillings. Another person, a merchant in Gisborne, was allowed a guinea a day. / When the case was heard, it was too late for me to go home, so that I was put to the full hotel expenses for myself and horse for a whole day. lam thus out of pocket three shillings (counting only the barest expenses) besides my loss of time, for which I am allowed no wage. I think it wrong that I should be allowed only a labourer’s fee, as I never w*as a labourer. lam now a sheep farmer, and besides that, I hold a Master Mariner’s Certificate,—l am &c., J. Trimmer. Tokomaru, 26th June, 1881.
