S.G.P. Company.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Directors of the above Company was held at the Company’s office, on Monday night last, when a large amount of important business was got through. Amongst other things Mr. Clarke announced his intention of going to Melbourne by the steamer on Friday next, and it was arranged that his visit to that city should be taken advantage of for the purpose of promoting the Company’s interests there. Accordingly, Mr. Clarke will take with him some fairly selected samples of both oil and paraffin, from both the Southern Cross and the South Pacific grounds, first to personally get the best evidence obtainable as to the marketable value of these commodities, and secondly, to form a syndicate with a local influence calculated to do the Company good. Herein we find much wisdom imported into the councils of the Southean Cross Company, as against the perfunctory indifference of the Sydney Directors of the South Pacific. No wiser step could have been taken than that to which we have drawn attention. Mr. Clarke has a wide and influential connection in Melbourne. He is bound up in such a way with both Companies, and with so large a stake in each, as give to shareholders the assurance and guarantee that while he is looking after his own interest he is not unmindful of theirs. We look forward to the most profitable results accruing from Mr. Clarke’s visit to Victoria’s Empire City; and compliment that gentleman and his co-Directors on the energy displayed in bringing the Company’s affairs into public favor, and creating public confidence.
