Hard-a-port!

Tauranga in the House of Representatives. “ Our Member ” has tried his hand at many things, physical if not mental, in his time, but we do not think him able to perform the task he proposes to undertake, in the following letter. It purports to be on the question of re-constituting Tauranga a port of entry ; although those “ new to the manner born,” might suppose the writer intends “ running the blockade.” It has never been understood that the port requires to be “ reopened ” ; still less is it necessary to threaten to bring “it ” up in the House when “we ” meet. The letter is as fairly a “ representative” one as we have seen for a long time. It runs thus, the italics are ours: — “ Gisborne, 21st May, 1881. “ C. Jordan, Esq., Tauranga. “ Dear Sir, —I have forwarded the resolutions passed by your meeting, held on the sth inst., re the opening of the Port of Tauranga. I may also mention that I have on several other occasions urged the Government to rc-open the said Port. In the event of the Government not agreeing to re-open the Port I shall bring it up in the House when we meet next month. —Yours faithfully, A. McDonald.”
