There is something very mysterious in the movements of the Directors of the South Pacific Petroleum Company. It has been understood for a long time past, that Mr. Fleming, the Managing Director, would pay a visit to Poverty Bay so soon as time permitted of him doing so, so as to make himself better acquainted with the actual state of affairs. Months are fading away into years, since the Company was formed, and to the shame of the Directors be it said, no one with any capacity or influence has thought proper to respond to the most pressing requests of the shareholders. But, in the face of all the fair promises and explanations, Mr. Fleming comes to the country, but not to Gisborne. We understand that he arrived in Auckland by the outgoing mail boat, and is bound to San Francisco in company with Mr. Onward Bates. Mr. Berry, the local Superintendent, went by the Rotorua, on Sunday, to meet Mr. Fleming, so that it is probable some good may result from a personal conference ; but it is a great pity Mr. Fleming could not see his way to devote a few days to so important a matter. With Mr. Clarke in Gisborne, Mr. Bates resigned, and Mr. Fleming in ’Frisco, things will soon come to a standstill altogether. A Mr. Jennings, we understand, will occupy Mr. B ates’ place on the Board, until the next goneral election.
