J Battery Variety Troupe Entertainment.
The members of the Battery are once again to delight us with their excellent entertainments which afforded so much general pleasure during the winter months last year. Certainly the opening bill of fare possesses some very toothsome morceaux, and gives promise that the well-earned reputation of these caterers for public delectation intend to maintain their prestige. Interspersed with the well known names of our most popular amateurs, we notice those of Madame Stewart, Captain Chrisp, and Mr. M. H. Smith. The latter gentleman who has only recently arrived in Gisborne, brings with him a high reputation as an amateur which we have no doubt he will fully maintain. Captain Chrisp will introduce one of the latest gems from the Old Country, entitled* “The Bugler,” with bugle accompaniment, and those who know the jolly skipper’s rich voice will look forward to his appearanc with pleasure. In addition to the songs announced there will also be several musical selections by amateurs and the Battery J Band. The concluding portion of the programme, in the farce of “My Turn Next,” will introduce to us Mr. F. W. Thompson, recently from Christchurch, and Mr. M. H. Smith, as a maid of all work prenomened “ Peggy.” As these gentlemen have played together before in the same piece, and have received the encomiums of the Christchurch press for their acting. What with our old favorites, Madame Stewart and the others, and the new faces it will be surprising if the hall is not filled.
