Gas for Gisborne.
We understand that Mr. W. Clarke is now forming a company for supplying the inhabitants of Gisborne with gas, and, as a preliminary, has applied to the Borough Council for permission to open roads and footpaths to lay pipes. Yesterday the whole of the shopkeepers on the north side of Gladstone Road, were canvassed as to number of burners would be required, resulting, in every instance, with promise of definite and satisfactory support. There can be little doubt that the whole of the business houses will endorse the undertaking. The late find of paraffin at Whirikoka has no doubt been the cause of this movement, as there is abundance of gas producing matter engaged with paraffin —so that we suppose the undertaking will be for the manufacture of gas and refined paraffin. If such is the case, we shall have as cheap a light as any town in the Colonies, and much cheaper than could be produced from coal. We understand that Councillors are, generally, in favor of the scheme, and we wish the project every success.
