4| per lb. more than the beat Kentish hops. Ever since Tasmania has been noted for its hop growing. But they have never produced such an article as is grown in Poverty Bay. lam getting a pound of the hops grown in Mr. Gillies’ garden at Ormond, to send to England, by next mail, to get tested, for I am confident that they will excel anything yet shipped to England, or Germany. Australia produced last year over 50,0001b5., and that at 2s 3d per lb. amounts to a great sum compard with of other crops. Wheat grown at the rate of 20 bushels to the acre, and sold at 4s per bushel would only produce £4 ; where, as the same acre put down in hops, would reward the grower by £96 instead of £4. If you will only try and just make a start, the trouble is not much, you will be surprised at the end of the year what a nice little sum you have realized.
