Saturday’s Rifle Match.

The return match between the Honorary and the Active members of the J Battery was productive of some of the best shooting ever witnessed in the district. The average of the shooting is fully equal if not superior to that made by any other team that has fired in New Zealand. This excellence has been attained in a great measure by steady practice, which is really the only thing to insure first- • class shooting. The following is a ' detailed account of the scoring from which our readers may judge for themselves: —

We may mention that Mr. Nasmith’s score is exactly that made by the Champion, Volunteer Turner, of the New Zealand Rifle Association, which is the highest ever scored in New Zealand, being 77 out of a possible 84. In the case of the latter, however, he was firing with one of the latest innovations —a steel-bored rifle; whilst our local shot had merely one of those _ t in our armoury, so that his shooting must be considersd the more wonderful. On the loosing side Mr. A. Taylor showed up well, scoring 71. Mr. Stubbs with 69, Mr. A. O’Meara with a like number, and Mr. Thelwall, 67, are all to be congratulated upon the excellence of their scoring. It is to be hoped that a continuance of these friendly matches will be arranged for, as it not only affords excellent practice but produces that spirit of emulation which has led so many to success.
