Mrs. Somervell has given a donation of £l,OOO to the New Zealand Presbyterian Church, the revenue of which is to be devoted to founding scholarships to be divided between Art students and Divinity students, to be called the Somervell Scholarships. Walsh, one of the members of the Land League, who was amongst those recently prosecuted for sedition, has left Ireland for New Zealand. It is assumed the object of his visit is to make arrangements in the Australian Colonies for the collection of subscriptions on behalf of the Land League. Proposals have been mooted for the Alpine Club to visit New Zealand for the purpose of thoroughly exploring the fine mountainous scenery of the colony. The idea has been favourably received among the members, and it is anticipated that a considerable number will visit New Zealand shortly. The practical joke of a lively “ My lady ” who cannot be out of mischief, says a London paper, was to fill the shower-bath of one of her admirers, at a country house they were staying at, with ink. Many lemons were used ere the ill-used one could put in an appearance. He bore it like an angel. Amongst other items of interest from Wairoa, we learn that the Council of that County had received a number of letters from County Councils on the subject of the proposed alterations in the constitution of the Waste Land Boards. There were twenty-one Councils who agreed with the proposals made by the Wairoa Council; three sympathised with the movement, but expressed doubt as to success being achievable ; five held the matter over for further consideration ; and three expressed dissent.
