CABLEGRAMS.

Melbourne, March 4th. A banquet was given last night to Mr. James Service, prior to his departure to Europe to-day. There were 500 persons present. The speeches delivered were principally of a retrospective character. A large number of passengers are now going to Europe by the P. and O. Co.’s boats. The demand is so great that all the cabins in the vessels are reserved for Australian passengers. The Melbourne Municipal Council have decided to raise a loan of £25,000, for which tenders are now invited.
