Borough Council.

The business transacted by the Council at Tuesday’s sitting, passed off quietly enough. A letter from Mr W. K. McLean was read, stating that his valuable dog having been poisoned ; and, as the Ranger was in the habit of carrying poison about with him, he was suspected of destroying the animal. Mr Faram denied having caused the dog’s death, and the Council instructed him to destroy unregistered animals otherwise than in the public street. The committee appointed to report on the charges made by the Ranger against the Gisborne pound, were allowed another week to bring up their report. The hon. Secretary applied to the Council for a sum in aid of the Poverty Bay Hospital. Cr. Brown supported the application, and gave a full account of the financial position of the Hospital, and urged that as this was only the second application made during the last four years, the Council should give the application a favorable consideration. The Hospital had about £6O to its credit; but they had decided to pay the surgeon in future. Cr. Piesse was of opinion that the Council could not entertain the application, as they were not in a position ; their account had been overdrawn to a large extent. He enquired why they had decided to pay the snrgeon ; nothing was before the Council, therefore he would move —“ That the letter be read this day six months.” Cr. Ward said this was one of those cases where the Council might stretch a point. It was the only application after a lapse of two years. He could hardly agree with Cr. Piesse in the remarks which had been made. He moved that a donation of £3O be given to the Hospital. Crs. Ward, and Berry, voted for the amendment which was lost, and Cr. Piesse’s motion carried, Crs. Clayton, Whinray, Tutchen, and Townley, also supporting it. The Engineer was instructed to inspect the Kaiti site of metal supply, and report to the Council. Several matters were ordered to stand over till next sitting, amongst others, the all-important one of water supply-
