Borough Council.

Thebe was not much business of importance transacted at the Borough Council on Tuesday evening last. The Engineer reported on the drainage required in certain streets in the town, and urged that side—outlet drains be opened in Cobden, Derby and Grey-streets. Mr W. Brassey sent the following sarcastic letter to the Board which the Council decided merely to acknowledge : —“ I should very much like to know if the footpaths lately shelled in Childers-street are set apart for footmen or horsemen, as I have lately seen people compelled to walk in the heavy sand to give way to horsemen travelling on the gravelled walks. It is also a constant practice for people living in the town, and who graze their horses at Read’s Town, to lead them all along the footpaths, which of course is much more convenient and pleasant than going through heavy sand. lam sure if you would permit the ratepayers to enclose say, 6ft. of the middle of the road and gravel it at their own expense they would gladly do it; because, at present, it is positively dangerous for any person save an active man to travel the road. I suggest the middle of the road, because it is at present unused, being rather heavy, and no one couid object.” The Town Clerk stated that Mr Brassey declined to inform him who the persons were who rode on the footpath. Councillors thought in that case no action could be taken by them. It was resolved to acknowledge the receipt of the letter.
