The Lydia Howard Troupe
After a deal of financial circumnavigation between the agent of the above Company and the ever enterprising Samuel S., matters were so far satisfactorily arranged on Thursday last that we received telegraphic instructions from Napier to post and advertise their first appearance on Monday next, before a Gisborne audience. Now; if there is no slip between the cup and the lip, and provided no hitch occurs, ad interim, the public of Poverty Bay may be congratulated on the occurrence of so great, and deservedly popular, musical phalanx visiting Gisborne. There are about 20 in all, and when we say that besides the illustrious Lydia herself, there are such names as DeGlorian, Leopold, Rose Andrews, Power, Starke, Marshall, and others of celebrity allied with that lady, an idea may be formed of the quality of music they can produce. The opening night will commence with 4 Robinson Crusoe,’ to be followed by the world-renowned “ Pinafore,” “ Nemesis,” and “ Ivanhoe,” unless it should be necessary to depart from that intention. We regret not to see a night set apart for the sparkling and ever charming “ Chilpericbut it is possible that may be found room for. We have not been favored with the good fortune of hearing the present Company; but if they (as we doubt not that they will do) come up to the talent which, under Miss Howard’s management, did the Colony some three or four years ago, when the graceful Solange Navarro, and the vivacious Jenny Nye were attaches, we can only assure our readers, that they have a treat in store such as has never before been seen in Gisborne, and which, in all probability, will not be heard or seen here again for a long time. >
