Mr. Lysnar’s Lecture.
Mr. W. D. Lysnar delivered a most interesting lecture on “ Explorations in Africa,” at McFarlane’s Hall on Wednesday evening last; and it is a matter of regret that there was not a more numerous attendance. In these days of research, and seeking for knowledge, it is a pity that parents, especially, do not induce their children to attend lectures such as these, whereby an amount of learning is imparted in a pleasing form, and, with youths of a retentive memory, never to be forgotten. Mr Lysnar treated the subject in a scholarly manner, and con-
vinced those present that his lecture was the outcome of deep thought. The maps he had on view for perusal are said to have been published in the time of James I.; and clearly tend to show that long before either Livingstone, or Stanley, had explored the interior of this vast continent, the Portuguese had, in days long gone by, become conversant with most of its geographical features. For purposes political and commercial, they did not divulge the information thus early gained, and thus it came about that the maps were suppressed ; but those now in-Mr Lysnar’s possession have been handed down to him as heirlooms, and money could hardly purchase them. The lecturer was listened to attentively throughout. His Worship the Mayor acted as chairman, and at the conclusion highly complimented Mr Lysnar.
