London, December, 25. The report circulated with regard to the resignation of the Marquis of Ripon of his position as Viceroy of India is void of foundation. Melboubne Jan. 3rd. Swan, the New Zealander, won the pedestrian match with 163 miles. Baker came in seven laps behind. In the cricket match Victoria v. New South Wales, the former scored in their first innings 205. The latter team in their first innings have lost seven wickets for 61 runs. Allan took 5 wickets. The Auckland yacht Taniwha has arrived in the Bay. The Legislative Assembly last night passed a resolution in favor of disbanding the Victorian Artillery force - It is reported from Natal that the insurgent Boers are committing great outrages on those dretnclined to join in the insurrection. Several persons have been massacred. The Officer commanding the British troops at Middleburg being desirous of communicating with the leader of the insurgents, despatched a party with a flag of truce, but they were fired at by the Boers. Intelligence has been received that the Boers in the Orange River Free State threaten to join the rebellion in the Transvaal, though no actual outbreak has yet occurred. Communication between Transvaal and Natal is now completely cut off by the Boers, and no news has therefore been received from the seat of hostilities for some days. It is supposed that the leaders of the Boer rebellion dwapproVer of the late massacre of troops, as they disclaim any responsibility ; hence the release of the soldiers who were taken prisoners. The jury empanelled to try Parnell and others indicted for conspiracy, consists of eight Roman Catholics, three Protestants, and one Quaker. Chief Justice May, after reading the statement justifying his language respecting traversers when application was made to postpone their trials, withdrew from the Bench; Judge Fitzgerald presides, with Judge Barry as his colleague ; the Attorney General’s address is proceeding. In Cork, a patrol of soldiers was attacked whilst making its rounds at night, by a number of disaffected persons, shots .were fired, and after a brief struggle the assailants were beaten off. Subsequent to this affair a policeman was shot in the street ; the murderer has not yet been discovered. The Times in a leading article to-day states that the Coercion Bill whch the Government intend to introduce, will propose the suspension of the Habeas Corpus Act, and the suspension of trial by Jury in Ireland ; and will moreover restrict the sale and possession of arms.
