TOLOGA BAY.
November 24th. The annual examination of children attending the Tologa Bay Native school took place on Friday last, in the presence of a large number of Native parents. The school-room internally looked most tastefully neat, and orderly. The children were dressed in their best and conducted themselves remarkably well on the occasion. The readiness with which the pupils answered the questions put to them was highly commendable. The singing accompanied by Mrs Parker on the Harmonium, was in itself a treat, and showed that much care had been bes’towed on this branch of their education. The following are a few of the songs sung :—“ Hold the Fort,” “We are waiting by the River.” and “ Happy Land.” After the examination the children, members of committee, and visitors, sat down to an excellent repast provided by Mrs Parker, and it need scarcely be stated that ample justice was done to the, good things provided. The Rev. Mr Kercona of Whangara was present, and took a prominent part in the days peoceedings. Hepeta Maitai, who has just returned from ,a 3 months’ visit to Hawkes Bay, and Wellington, and the Rev. Kereopa, gave the children much good advice, as to the necessity of a regular attendance Jto duties, &c., The guests, and the pupils then adjourned to a clear grass plot, near the school, where sports were heartily entered into for an hour or so; these comprised racing, jumping &c.
Prizes, ranging from one shilling to half-a-crown were awarded at the close of the proceedings. Hepeta Maitai proposed that himself, Arapeta Paku, and the teacher should unite in the getting up of a general feast for next Christmas, as he thought it was Ijardly fair tp expect the teacher to bear the whole expense, co say nothing of'thc Herculca.ii task imposed on M-rs Parker in cbdking, &<!., The day was rather showery, but despite all, the whole proceedings were a decided success. —Communicated.
