Read’s Testimonial.

Sib.—Now that the political battle of the East Coast has been fought and lost, would it not be a graceful act on the part of Captain Read’s election committee and ardent admirers to institute a public subscription to reimburse to our worthy exmember at least a portion of the enormous expense it must have cost him while gallantly fighting our battle ? Were such a movement set on foot I am sure it would be liberally responded to seeing the interest he has always taken in this district, and the heavy claim he has on nearly all our purses, — I am &c., 12] PER CENT.

Sib.—The latest news from Gisborne is to the effect that Capt. Read’s election committee, have generally subscribed £2OOO to defray that gentleman’s expenses at the late election, and that he is to be entertained at a grand dinner in his honor by the members of the Poverty Bay Club on his return to the district. I may remark the report is merely verbal, and I regret I have seen nothing referring to it in the columns of the P. B. Herald, the last Gisborne paper I have seen. Knowing the remarkable energy of the gentlemen of the committee, and the public spirit of the people of Gisborne, I am disposed toplace some reliance in the report, and trust to have it confirmed in your next issue.—l am &c., Hikaubangi. [We think, and we hope, that “Hikaurangi.” will, for once, be disappointed.— Ed.]
